What’s the next Porsche 911 Targa like?

A 991 with the new glass sunroof option

Among the excitement of the new 991 Carrera 4 and 4S four-wheel drive announcement, Porsche quietly introduced a new 911 option – a glass sunroof.

Now, the 991 already had the option of a metal tilt and slide sunroof which, compared to previous 911 sunroofs which were small, allows a goodly amount of light and air into the cabin. This latest glass version gives a light and airy cabin even when the roof is closed.

Sounds familiar? That’s because it’s similar in effect to the glass-roofed Targa of the 993, 996 and 997. OK, the new roof doesn’t have such a large amount of glass or opens as much, but it effectively negates the need for a glass Targa roof.

So where does that leave the 911 Targa? Well, there have been rumours and photos circulating of a new Targa that harks back to the roll-hoop style of old. This is an intriguing concept and I’d love to know more, as I am not sure buyers today would want to cope with a lift-out roof section, so maybe Porsche has reinvented the Targa yet again.

What is encouraging is that people are excited about the prospect of a return to the ‘traditional’ Targa styling and that will increase interest in older Targas such as this lovely 964 example.
